TOILES
A prototype garment, known as a Toile, is crafted using calico or other suitable fabrics, either as a half or full version, to facilitate fitting in conjunction with an initial pattern.

First-fit toiles prioritise fit, proportion, and balance, and typically have minimal embellishments or finishing. They are primarily used to assess these foundational design aspects.

To achieve the desired appearance and fit for each design, a toile can be pinned, cut, re-stitched, and marked with style lines and details directly on the fabric.

Development toiles encompass a more comprehensive range of design elements and features. These can be generated at any point during the prototyping process and represent a stage just before the final garment in the intended fabric. A development toile made from calico, for example, might include functional pockets, topstitching, zips, and trims. These added features aid in visualising the design concept and can serve as a reference during factory production.

Although not obligatory, it is advisable to provide a toile or development sample to your factory in addition to the finalised pattern and tech pack.
